Samples from several conventional, bioreactor and leachate recycle landfills were collected to evaluatethe degradation rate and degradation pattern of lignocelluloses (cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin),and the relationship between the lignocelluloses and biochemical me thane potential (BMP) and volatilesolid (VS). It was found that degradation of VS and cellulose in bioreactor landfills is much fasterthan in conventional landfills. These data suggest that the time to stabilization is reduced to about 1/3that of conventional landfills. In the initial, rapid degradation phase, the primary degradation substrateis cellulose. After cellulose is reduced to a range of 15-20% of the waste, degradation of the remainingcellulose along with lignin and the hemicelluloses takes place. This onset of lignin and hemicellulosedegradation results in an increase in the BMP.
